Joseph Horswell Biography

A native of Southern California, Joseph Horswell’s professional career has spanned four decades, covering a wide variety of instrumental and vocal styles, including Classical, Broadway, Big-band Jazz, Bop, Blues, Soul, Fusion, Pop, Rock, Smooth Jazz, Country, Latin, Gospel and Contemporary Christian music. 

  

Throughout the years, Horswell has worked with a diverse list of well-known industry heavyweights.  His credits include live performances, recording sessions, and album cameos with an enviable list of prominent artists, studio musicians, Grammy winners and nominees such as: 

Latin Trumpeter Bobby Rodriguez, Pianist Roger Kellaway, Soul group "The Brothers Johnson", Country artist Michael Martin Murphy, Latin Percussionist Tito Puente, Pop singer Jim Messina, R & B singer Joe Cocker,

 R & B singer Kim Wilson ("The Fabulous Thunderbirds"), Latin composer/percussionist Luis Munoz,  the late renowned studio guitarist Tommy Tedesco, vocalist Jeanne Tatum, the late local guitar monster Larry Nass (Aerto Morea and Flora Purim), as well as show openings for “Tower of Power”, “The Average White Band”, “The Crusaders”, Steve Winwood, and legendary Jazz Trumpeter Freddy Hubbard.

 

Horswell continues to perform throughout Southern California with several different groups including, "The Joseph Horswell Quartet", "The Contemporary Jazz Trio", and "The Fusion Jazz Quintet", (AKA the original "Pentasonic"). 

 

Joseph Horswell is the staff Saxophone teacher at Thacher School in Ojai CA, as well as the Assistant Thacher Jazz Band Director.  He was also formerly the woodwind teacher at Cate School in Carpinteria CA, and still maintains a studio in Ojai CA where he teaches a handful of talented local kids.  He holds a CNS in Computer Science from UCSB in Santa Barbara CA, and a WGNA certification in Wideband Gigabit Network Administration from the International Academy of Sciences, in Independence MO.  

 

Horswell also holds a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Chang Hun TaeKwon Do.  He was formerly an ITF and USTA certified martial arts instructor, and taught criminal countermeasures to women's groups for self-defense. 

  

When not performing or teaching, Horswell enjoys spending time with his family, horseback riding, working out at the gym, playing and singing in church, reading, live theater, art museums, 4-wheel drive off-roading, astronomy, and flying R/C planes and helicopters.
